When you start shopping for a shipping container you’ll quickly run into two main options: new (one-trip) and used (wind & watertight). Both are structurally sound — the right choice comes down to budget, appearance and how you’ll use it.
New “one-trip” containers
A one-trip container has made a single journey from the factory carrying cargo, so it’s effectively as-new. Expect clean paint, minimal dents and a long service life. These are ideal for container homes, offices, retail fit-outs and anywhere appearance matters.
Used wind & watertight (WWT) containers
Used containers have spent years in service and show honest signs of wear — surface rust, scuffs and the odd dent. Crucially, a WWT-graded unit is still dry, secure and structurally sound. For general storage, tool sheds, farm use or job sites, used stock delivers excellent value.
Quick comparison
- Lowest cost: used WWT
- Best appearance: new one-trip
- Longest lifespan: new one-trip
- Best for storage: used WWT
- Best for habitable/branded builds: new one-trip
